DJARRAK FINALS BOUND

August 18, 2017

Djarrak Football Club will be represented by both its Womens and Mens Programs in week 1 of the Gove AFL Finals Series where they take on Gopu Football Club with the Womens game at 11am and the Men starting at 4pm respectively. Both games will take place at Yirrkala Oval.

The Womens side has had a successful first season and qualified second on the ladder behind Gopu FC on percentage. Coach Timothy Blake has been impressed with the effort on the training paddock this week. He said "It has been fantastic to see the Djarrak Miyalk step up their commitment and dedication to the club in the past couple weeks. Attendance at training has boomed and they are so enthusiastic that I'm the one having to call an end to the session due to poor light! He added "I think this new found motivation is a result of them only now realising just how close they are to premiership glory. The miyalks have a chance to forever etch themselves in the history books as the first ever GAFL women's premiers much like the men back in 1975".

Blake identified the defensive zone where the powerful backline is led by Nikki whom has dominated the comp all season. Shanita, Kaya and Bayini are genuine superstars in the middle and will be key if the side are to have finals success. The forward line is always dangerous and the particularly formidable combination of RakRak, Rokuwuy and Gawiya lining up tomorrow. The side welcomes the return of ex St Mary's star in Ashanti as she returns to play following a successful birth of Zyliah. Supporters are urged to be at Yirrkala Oval for the 11am start time.

The Mens team enter the Finals Series on the back of two losses and fell short against Gopu FC last week in the final round of the regular season. Senior Coach Hayden Rickard was philosophical when asked if form counts heading into this round. He remarked "Obviously its not ideal to come in on the back of a loss. We had chances to convert last week and a sloppy 50m penalty certainly invited them to seize the result. We weren't far off where we need to be and we have a more balanced squad this week. He added "Our defensive voice in Cameron Stokes will add direction we have sorely missed in his absence and some players will be better for last weeks run. We learnt a lot last week and believe we will present as a more dangerous side tomorrow".

Captain Djayminy Marika has been named and will be given up until game start to prove his fitness from a hamstring injury. The medical assessment on Bernie Price has been positive and he will also be given time to prove fitness and coaching staff will look to monitor his load throughout. Veteran Benji Maymuru returns to the side and the former skipper will shift forward in the closing stages of each quarter to provide a calming influence to proceedings.

Unavailable for selection this week are Justin Tolley, Rhys Mulholland, Bradley Bara, Timothy Blake (out for season), Grant Maymuru (out for season), Michael Maymuru (out for season) and Robbie Wunaragun (ceremony).
