Djarrak Football Club was pipped 12.8 80 - 13.9 87 by Gopu Football Club on Saturday in a close encounter that will see the two sides face off in Round 1 of 2017 Gove AFL Finals action. Djarrak FC claim the Minor Premiership and have secured a home final to be played at Yirrkala Oval this Saturday.
Gopu FC was dominant early building a handy 7.5 47 - 4.8 32 lead over the Brown and Gold Army. Djarrak FC responded in the third quarter to finally inflict some damage on the scoreboard. Key Forward Bernie Price booted four majors and Matthew Campbell toiled hard despite a calf injury. It was Gopu FC that dominated the final period and they skipped away to a 7 point win and second out-right on the Gove AFL Ladder to ensure the extra finals life afforded to the first two qualifiers.
Senior Coach Hayden Rickard remained calm when asked for his thoughts on the winnable game that slipped away late. He said "Credit to Gopu. A bloody desperate team out there today and they fought for second on the ladder. I thought some of our lads put their hands up to demand finals selection next week. He added "Result aside, I was pleased with aspects of our game that we had addressed following our last review and we have built nicely with the disrupted bye rounds over the last month. We will be ready for a honest performance next week that our supporters can be proud of".
Unfortunately Price has had a reoccurrence of his groin injury and will miss the finals campaign. Djarrak FC have a number of players unavailable through injury and cultural obligations for the final series.
