TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT ROUND 1

April 21, 2017

Djarrak Football Club have announced an extended team that is charged with the responsibility of contesting Round 1 in the Gove AFL Mens Premiership for 2017. The Brown and Gold Army will take on Nhulunbuy Baywara Football Club at Yirrkala Oval at 12:00pm.

The Team Selection Committee believe they have the right blend of youth and experience to signal positive intentions following the rebuilding process undertaken in 2016. The team has added height throughout the spine, but it will again be the running game and quick transition through the middle that the side will look to base its game plan around.

Senior Coach Hayden Rickard was thrilled when asked about the naming of the first round team. He said "Really pleased with the cattle we will put out on the paddock this week. It was bloody difficult finding the right mix after a pretty energetic and willing session last night that showed the selection committee some new options and has caused a number of headaches already." He added "We haven't had a seamless preseason, but we have enough content into the group that the foundation of where we want to end up is looking likely to eventuate sooner than later. Last season took us 10 rounds to really find our playing style, I'd like that feeling out period halved at a minimum".

A number of former Djarrak Football Club stalwarts are welcomed back into the side with Grant Maymuru, Murray Marika, Djamika Ganambarr and Jeffery Gumana returning. Dale Dhamarrandji and Bernie Price will debut in Djarrak colours and add football nous to the defensive zone. Cameron Stokes takes charge of the backline and mixes coaching and playing responsibilities for 2017.

Midfield Coach Steven Raymond has a young but mobile fleet of players at his disposal this round. The group will take time to gel and adjust to the new roles, with some of last years outside players moving onto the ball including the improved Lee Mununggurr and Tyrone Dhagapan. Both of these players showed potential for Darwin Buffaloes as demonstrated by winning Premier League spots throughout the year.

Rickard takes responsibility to get the attack firing in the forward line. Djayminy Marika and Djamika Ganambarr will be asked to remain dangerous throughout the round 1 fixture. Veteran Richie Morton provides a calming voice with a history of football through Alice Springs and Country Victoria.

The following team and interchange/extended emergencies will be confirmed prior to game start. Players to assemble 10:50am.
