Djarrak Football Club played a leading role in assisting the Nhulunbuy Corporation to install the newly decorated Town Bins as part of a community project to beautify the Nhulunbuy Town Centre. Club coaching staff and players collaborated with Clontarf Foundation Yirrkala School and AFLNT to donate time and labour to assist the Nhulunbuy Corporation with this initiative. The installation process took place on Sunday morning in sweltering conditions.

The project was celebrated in the Town Square today and Sam Marika representing Rirratjingu Clan and Dhimurru gave a welcome to country. He mentioned the significance of the art and celebrated Yolngu and Balanda working together. Nhulunbuy Corporation with the support of Rio Tinto staff delivered a community BBQ to support the official opening of the project.

Maria Robbins, Town Vision Project Manager coordinated the effort from start to finish. Robbins oversaw the process of reinstalling the bins in the correct identified areas. A number of community organisations, groups and individuals painted the bins with the theme being local flora and fauna. Nhulunbuy and the wider indigenous communities certainly have some talented artists amongst their midst with community feedback being extremely positive.

Nic O'Riley, AFLNT Regional Development Officer said "We at AFLNT believe that football owes a lot to the community, so, this was a great opportunity to volunteer on behalf of the organisation and also to work with other football stakeholders in the region. The bins look amazing and just a huge congratulations to all the artists".

With Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation recently supporting Clontarf Foundation Yirrkala School participants to attend a football carnival in Darwin, Director Bernie Price ensured a group of students was on hand to assist in the installation. Price remarked "Activities such as these provide an opportunity for our students to display leadership and also portray the boys in a positive light amongst the community"

Djarrak Football Club are pleased to have volunteered for this community project. The project was used for players and coaches that have received opportunities to travel to Darwin with the Rirratjingu Football Program to give back to the club for a community based cause and with Nhulunbuy falling within traditional Rirratjingu land lines it was an obvious choice for the group.
