The Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation will this week reward four outstanding students from the Clontarf Academy at Yirrkala School with a trip to Darwin that culminates in playing for Under 14 Light Blue Darwin Buffaloes at TIO Stadium on Friday night. Rirratjingu Football Program participant BJ Mununggurr will be joined by fellow students Baltjawuma Maymuru, Gundjarra Mununggurr and Birayngu Marawili and the boys will be mentored by Senior Footballers from the program in Justin Burarrwanga and Lenny Maymuru.
Bernie Price from Clontarf Academy Yirrkala School will travel with the boys, and, Djarrak Football Club have identified Bernie as a perfect fit for Djarrak FC Juniors that will participate in the slated 2017 Under 16 Competition. Price said "The boys have been selected after a putting together a really solid year of consistent school attendance and positive behaviour. Opportunities like these from Rirratjingu are a massive incentive for our boys and will play a key role in consistent school engagement moving forward"
The trip will involve a visit to the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre at TIO Stadium as well as visiting Charlie King at ABC Studio. Djarrak Football Club envisage both Junior and Women's Programs in the 2017 and will model these programs in line with the senior model that promotes to worth of the person above talent.
On a sombre note, Steven Raymond will represent the Rirratjingu Football Program at the funeral for the late Lorna Motlop on Friday morning. Mrs Motlop was matriarch to a family football dynasty that has reached the heights of Territory and National AFL football. The program extends our sympathies to Darwin Buffaloes Head Coach Mark Motlop and the wider Motlop families.
