MUNUNGGURR JOINS STAMPEDE

October 27, 2016

Rirratjingu Football Program will unveil its youngest member with BJ Mununggurr travelling to Darwin to compete for Darwin Buffaloes Under 14 Light Blue and will debut at 8am Saturday at TIO Stadium Number 2 Oval. Mununggurr, 13, has been holding his own amongst the senior members of the program and his fitness should see him perform well on Saturday.

Head Coach Hayden Rickard was full of praise for Mununggurr. He said "This is a reward for dedication to training and school attendance. BJ has stood out amongst the senior players. We challenged him to keep working hard and this weekend is his reward. He added "I'm sure he's jumping out of his skin. We just want him to think where the ball will end up rather than chasing the game. He's a really good build for 13, tall and athletic. We see some potential, but, at the end of the day he's a kid. He's having fun training. Let him play we say".

Mununggurr will be surrounded by Senior players for his first trip and will be mentored largely by Justin Burarrwanga.

Yirrkala Clontarf Coordinator Hamish Simpson has identified Mununggurr of deserving the chance and cited his school attendance as reason enough for the Program to reward the youngster.

Standing just shy of six foot, the talented junior will likely be used in the ruck. Position aside, his athleticism should ensure plenty of touches and a well deserved taste of structured competition. Football stakeholders on the Gove Peninsula are currently working together behind the scenes to form an Under 16 Competition to ensure the talent pathway to Darwin is a realistic goal for young footballers in the region.

The Rirratjingu Football Program falls within the Social Programs arm of Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation.
