FINAL QUARTER FLURRY FALLS SHORT

August 1, 2016

Djarrak Football Club bought back valiantly in a encouraging performance against form side Gopu Football Club at Yirrkala Football Ground on Saturday but still fell short of a pass mark going down 11.9.75 - 12.11.83. The Brown and Gold Army started into the wind in the first quarter and managed to stay in touch with the Gove AFL ladder leaders through some tenacious tagging and accurate disposals.

Gopu FC was well served by former AFL Player Andrew McLeod who had some quality touches but wasn't allowed it all his way with Shaun Mununggurr and Michael 'Longy' Maymuru working hard through the corridor. Cameron Stokes filled a spare defender role as Djarrak flooded the back field in the third quarter in order to limit the damage against the strong wind the was blowing out to sea ward side of the ground. Veteran Joshua Marika was accurate through his rotation and rookie Billy Wanambi impressed with a stint on the ball.

Trailing by 6 goals at three quarter time break Djarrak FC regrouped and set about chasing the game. Using the wind and deploying a 2-4 forward structure the team had some success and dominated the final term with accurate kicking and a real attack on the loose ball. It wasn't to be however and the team ran out of time going down by 8 points in a display that was positive considering a number of outs through work commitments, that included the defensive spine of the team and a quality rotational player.

It will be season on the line this Saturday against Gapuwiyak FC at Hindle Oval in the 2pm game. Djarrak FC sit equal with Baywarra FC who were upset by Gapuwiyak FC on the weekend and Djarrak FC Head Coach Hayden Rickard indicated he wouldn't be taking the remote Community side easy. "Gapuwiyak were fantastic on the weekend. We had one eye on their game for obvious reason and they have done us a favour of sorts with their win. We didn't get the result ourselves, but I really feel we are gaining momentum at the right time of the year. We get some quality defenders back this week and we can ensure our supporters we will be desperate to get a outcome."
