DJARRAK EARN LIFELINE

July 23, 2016

A spirited performance from a desperate Djarrak Football Club saw a hard earned victory over Baywarra Football Club in the midday game played at Hindle Oval earlier today. Fine conditions with a strong sea breeze blowing across the ground from the Gove House end meant trying conditions for both teams throughout the game.

The Brown and Gold Army made good use of the wind in the first quarter and four goals signalled intentions for the team in the 20 minute period. It was a even second quarter with Baywarra enjoying a number of visits into the Djarrak defensive zone. Djarrak FC led at halftime and it was impressive after the break where Lapsi Mununggurr and Djayminy Marika enjoyed extra space from a two man forward line set up. The forward line showed desperation with a goal earned from five consecutive contestable skirmishes. The fourth quarter saw a busy midfield work well into the breeze with Michael 'Longy' Maymuru building a good combination with Ruckmen Nash Boessi and newcomer Tim Blake.

Justin Burarrwanga had a fine game starting on the wing and latterly moving into a midfield rotation. Ex-Hawthorn player Cameron Stokes continues to build into Gove AFL duties with his third consecutive match. Captain Ricky Rose was very composed out of full back and then snuck some goals when moved into Centre Half-Forward.

Djarrak FC head coach Hayden Rickard was optimistic post match on the ramifications of a hard fought win "We had everything to play for as a team today, lose and season was pretty much gone. It's still in our hands to an extent and we aren't relying on other results so I'm wrapped for the group. Training commitment has been first class. Our small sided games are seeing some good habits emerge, are we the finished article, no, but we are moving in a good direction. Our young players especially (Justin) Burarrwanga and (Billy) Wanambi were huge for us today. Our veterans in Michael Maymuru and his brother Benji (Maymuru) really added some class touches. Cameron Stokes continues to build and his talk has been immense for our group to be around. We just need to back it up next week."

Djarrak FC face Gopu FC at Yirrkala Oval at 4pm next week. Positions are up for grabs with a number of players having commitments at Garma Festival over the weekend. Training will be on Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm with the playing group being reminded of the importance of the next three games to try and force a place in the semi-finals.
