FINAL QUARTER FLURRY LEADS TO WIN

June 9, 2016

Djarrak Football Club ran out winners by 111-89 over Baywarra Football Club in an entertaining game at Hindle Oval on Saturday. The match was played in fine conditions with a strong breeze blowing down from the Datjala Camp end of the ground.

Tyrone Dhagapan kicked five majors throughout the match that was evenly poised at the three quarter time break. Three quick goals to start the quarter opened up a defendable lead and the brown and gold army was clinical in securing a highly needed win. Debutants Rhys Mulholland, Simon Ellis and Abel Paredulta showed some classy touches and will be keen to cement regular team positions. Ishmael Marika returned for his first match of the season and was a calming influence roving across the backline.

Newcomer Nash Boessi played the full game as ruckman and was supported in the middle well by midfielders Ricky Rose, Brendan Marika and Jayson Wilson. Billy Wanambi came of age on the weekend and his contested possessions at ground level were a sign of the hard work he has undertaken in finding his confidence in this area.

Head Coach Hayden Rickard was pleased with the result and discipline of the group. He stated "It was a real hands on team effort today. Our accuracy in front of the sticks was good and we were able to hang in the contest. You could see we had the legs, and the final quarter was a real reflection of the hard yards we have put in to date. I thought our discipline was fantastic. A couple of our players wore some questionable shots today but we just stood firm and attacked the footy - we took a step forward and now we can look ahead to a weekend off before we have a home derby against Nguykal".

It has been a tricky period for the club to negotiate, with a number of ceremonies ruling key players out of team selection. It is envisaged that the coming weeks will see a real competition for playing spots open up with Rickard keen to remind the group of the dedication required to gain and keep a starting spot. "Our group should be under no illusions as to what it takes to play for the club. This years team is selected Tuesday and Thursday and I won't deviate or compromise on that. A number of players have learned valuable lessons over the last month about team selection. Its been tough on our results but our culture we are building at the club will be stronger for it" He continued "Playing isn't a right, its something you earn. We have some targets around where we end up on the ladder, but at the same time, we are preparing men to play in Darwin. The discipline and focus required to play NTFL Premier League football is a massive step up from here. If we have players pushing for participation in the Rirratjingu Football Program, we really must be using the club as a development environment as well as chasing wins on Saturday's".

Djarrak FC will meet Nguykal FC at Yirrkala on 18 June at 4:00PM.
