NTFL TEAMS EYE YIRRKALA CLASH

May 27, 2016

Representatives from NTFL clubs Darwin Buffaloes Football Club and Wanderers Football Club met officials from Yirrkala based Djarrak Football Club and Nguykal Football Club to explore opportunities to support cyclone affected communities by adding value to a football carnival in late September that would bring both Darwin sides to picturesque Yirrkala Football Ground in an exhibition match.

Darwin Buffaloes and Djarrak FC have partnered in the Rirratjingu Football Program that was successful in allowing football pathways from Yirrkala to Darwin, had health and social behaviour education delivered through program partner Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation, and this week, sees a program participant play football for Rio Tinto Footy Means Business Program on the MCG in a curtain raiser to Dreamtime at the G between Essendon Football Club and Richmond Football Club. The Rirratjingu Football program can already demonstrate providing the program to a participant from cyclone affected Galiwin'ku Community on Elcho Island.

Nguykal FC and Wanderers FC are exploring a similar relationship with both parties committed to the September carnival as a lead in. The NTFL teams would have a number of playing positions filled by the Yirrkala clubs and the local community would be witness to future NTFL players that would continue the presence of Yirrkala footballers gracing the fields of Darwin.

Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation hosted the meeting, and vice-chairman Wanyubi Marika took the group on a tour of Buku Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre which included a powerful presentation on the significance of art associated with various Land Rights claims that originated from this region. Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation CEO Stuart MacLean outlined the business interests of the corporation and the extensive support that the sporting and arts communities receive to help promote engaged and safe communities in the wider East Arnhem area.

Darwin Buffaloes provide 150 Premier League game player Liam Philpott and Steven Anderson to join Djarrak FC and Wanderers FC provide former AFL superstar Daniel Motlop to support Nguykal stalwart Nathan Djerrkura, that will excite supporters of Gove AFL to have such quality on display at Yirrkala Football Ground.

NTFL and GAFL Club Parties meet at Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation to discuss supporting Cyclone affected communities through bringing NTFL sides to Yirrkala based carnival.
