Gopu Football Club won an open encounter against Djarrak Football Club in the late game at Yirrkala Football Ground on Saturday running out winners by a healthy 14.12.96 to 10.7.67 in the Gove AFL Round 3 clash.

An inaccurate second quarter with five shots missed from handy positions came back to haunt Djarrak FC as they attempted a third second half fight back in as many matches for the year. The slow starts are a focus for the club as they continue a rebuilding phase that has seen a significant number of debutants in brown and gold already this season.

Despite the result, Head Coach Hayden Rickard was optimistic with some signs during the game. "It's tough on some of our younger players who are finding their feet at senior level - hard work, that's the answer for our group. Result aside, we made some massive improvements with our disposal this week, the players really took to heart the message for the team gives versus our habit for U-turns in weeks 1 and 2. We made some really fundamental team based decisions and these are what will work for us going deeper into the season".

Michael Maymuru had his best game for the year and demonstrated a willingness to put his body on the line best exemplified by a massive clash with a former teammate in the second quarter. Jayson Wilson was active across the half forward line and provided a moving target throughout the game. Oscar White was handy as Centre Halfback and will be sorely missed when he relocates to Alice Springs next week.

This week the team travel to Gapuwiyak for a must win clash to stay in touch with the Top 4.
