A rampant first half of Gove AFL football from Nguykal Football Club saw them win the spoils in the 2015 Grand Final rematch as a Djarrak Football Club tasted defeat in the first round match for 2016 going down 19.9.123-10.6.66. Dominating the centre from the outset, Nguykal FC were clinical with delivery to their forward line and effectively put the result of the match beyond doubt by halftime after opening an 88-21 lead.
Djarrak FC had 13 debutants wear brown and gold for the first time and it was obvious the 2015 history between the sides held minimal motivation for the new team that had only 6 2015 Gove AFL Premiership players in action. Djarrak FC was able to climb back into the match after halftime with a more accountable display across the defensive zone and a direct approach moving the ball through the corridor.
Brendan Marika stood out for Djarrak FC when working on the ball and across forward and complemented a promising display from Ricky Rose whom shared a rotational role. Oscar White stood tall as a defender that was never bettered throughout the match and was a strength with his rebounding off half-back in the second half. Shaun Mununggurr was impressive in his debut for the club and added significant worth through the middle of the ground. Composed displays by youngsters Joseph Martin-Jard, Justin Burarrwanga and Lee Mununggurr suggest the team can take a lot out of the second half display.
"Whilst it was disappointing the result was decided effectively by halftime, the way the group responded by really taking the contest on in the third quarter and finding solutions as a team shows me we have enough talent and football smarts to be excited going forward. The great thing is, we get an opportunity next week, we get two sessions to add to our structures we got to test live for the first time today - it"s exciting" said Head Coach Hayden Rickard who remained optimistic. "Yes we have a number of work on's that are pretty urgent to address, but I'm positive its better to win the last game of the year than the first. In saying that, well done to Nguykal, they played some great football and dominated through their run and spread - the first half was as dominant a half of football as I've seen" he added.
The team prepares for a Round 2 clash with Baywarra FC at Hindle Oval this coming Saturday May 7 with first bounce at 12:00pm.
